TARAFDER Lab Secures First Research Grant to Advance Rotator Cuff Repair Innovation

The TARAFDER Lab is proud to announce a major milestone: its first-ever research grant has been awarded by STARTUP Central/NIH to support work in musculoskeletal tissue engineering. This milestone follows the lab’s establishment in Fall 2023, marking a strong start in its mission to address complex biomedical challenges.

The awarded project, titled “Engineering Integrated Tendon-to-Bone Interface with a Multi-Layered Biomimetic Scaffold,” is led by Dr. Solaiman Tarafder as Principal Investigator. The grant, totaling $30,000, will officially start on May 1, 2024, and will run through February 28, 2025.

This project addresses a significant healthcare burden—rotator cuff injuries, which affect millions annually in the United States and often result in high surgical failure and re-tear rates. Dr. Tarafder’s team proposes the development of an off-the-shelf, bioactive scaffold designed to regenerate the complex tendon-to-bone interface using the body’s own stem or progenitor cells. The scaffold is engineered for arthroscopic implantation and focuses on biomimicry and integration—key factors currently missing from many synthetic and graft-based approaches.

This Proof of Concept (POC) award is not only a significant boost to the lab’s early-stage research, but also a signal of the innovative potential within the TARAFDER Lab. The TARAFDER Lab looks forward to advancing this impactful work and building on this success as it grows its research portfolio in regenerative medicine and biomaterials.
